Six Notre Dame Football players are in hot water today as they were arrested on Friday night and early Saturday for multiple incidents.

It hasn’t exactly been a banner day for Notre Dame Football. Waking up to the news that six of his players were arrested on Friday and early Saturday, head coach Brian Kelly can’t be too pleased with his team heading into the final weeks of summer ball.

Being so close to the start of the season, Kelly has a few big decisions to make about the future of some of his players.

According to CSN Chicago, senior safety Max Redfield and fellow upperclassman cornerback Devin Butler along with four underclassmen were arrested Friday night and Saturday morning.

Redfield, sophomore linebacker Te’von Coney, sophomore running back Dexter Williams, redshirt freshman corner Ashton White and freshman wide out Kevin Stepherson were all arrested on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams were also caught with a firearm and no license about 50 miles outside of South Bend.

As for Butler, he was arrested in South Bend for battery of a law enforcement official as well as resisting arrest — the first charge is a felony.

This couldn’t be worse for the Fighting Irish as these kids, led by a couple of seniors, should know better, especially with just two weeks until the season kicks off. Opportunities may have been wasted with these dumb mistakes and Butler may even find himself kicked out of school and in jail.

Coney and Redfield looked to start and lead a talented, but young, Notre Dame defense this year and now their futures are looking murky. Stepherson was hoping to crack the receiver rotation, but that may not happen now.

This should serve as an important life lesson for other collegiate athletes: sometimes a “fun night” can cause serious consequences for your future.
