The 2016 season kicks off for one of the SEC’s top teams as well as an underrated Sun Belt squad. Tennessee will be hosting the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the first game of the year, but this might be an even better game than people truly give it credit for.

Although the Volunteers are projected to finish in the top three in the SEC this season, competing with Alabama for the conference crown, the Mountaineers are no pushover. Finishing the 2015 season with an 11-2 record and second-place finish in the Sun Belt, Appalachian State will be a tough first opponent for Tennessee.

Playing Clemson in the second game of the season in 2015, Appalachian State got a taste of what a top-10 opponent brings to the table. Will they learn from that loss and give Tennessee a run for its money?

Joshua Dobbs looks to lead the Volunteers as one of the best quarterbacks in college football and a true Heisman contender. He’s arguably the best quarterback in the SEC this season and will have a major impact on the Volunteers’ final record. Jalen Hurd will be a force to be reckoned with for Tennessee in this one as well against the country’s 27th-best run defense last year.

Junior quarterback Taylor Lamb had an impressive sophomore season, passing for 2,387 yards, 31 touchdowns and just nine picks with a completion rate of 60 percent for the Mountaineers. Marcus Cox was solid as well, rushing for 1,423 yards and nine scores. This game is going to be much better than advertised.
