College Football: 3 starting QBs who won’t survive 2017 season
I hate to admit this, because I thought Kevin Wilson could fix J.T. Barrett, but he seems washed up. The struggles in the first half of the Indiana game have just compounded upon themselves against the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 2.
Under pressure, Barrett looks horrible and without pressure he overthrows receivers without rhyme or reason. He has regressed in Columbus since his freshman year where he led the program to the Big Ten title game.
Injuries can set players back, there’s no doubt about that (see: Zaire, Malik as well), and he hasn’t been the same passer since. Barrett can still carry the ball but his actual passing mechanics are horrible.
The Urban Meyer offensive system will beat up a quarterback’s shoulder. Tim Tebow was built for that type of beating but we can all recall the time he was knocked out cold, and even with good size Braxton Miller injured his shoulder. Denard Robinson, I know it’s Michigan but still, injured his shoulder as well in a similar scheme in Ann Arbor, and now Barrett can’t keep his accuracy on any range of throw.

Barrett has been limited to a single-wing style ‘quarterback’ where defenses are licking their lips at the idea of third-and-medium or longer. He ran for 66 yards against Oklahoma and 61 yards and a touchdown against Indiana. While those aren’t massive running stats like from Zach Abey of Navy, it’s a different offense and the quarterback is supposed to be the secondary run threat to the tailback.
So who replaces JT? The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Joe Burrow, a native Ohioan, could be the guy. Burrow broke his hand in practice but he did throw in warmups last week. Then there’s redshirt freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins from Maryland. He’s 6-foot-3 and 214 pounds and was sharing the “or” on the depth as the backup to Barrett heading into the season.
