College Football: Group of 5 Week 4 power rankings
By Zach Bigalke
Memphis made some major noise in Week 3 after their postponed game against UF. With No. 25 UCLA visiting the Liberty Bowl, the Tigers traded punches with the Bruins to secure a 48-45 upset at home. In any other week, this statement would have been among the biggest upsets of the weekend. Unfortunately for the Tigers, it came during a week chock full of upsets.
Even then, it remains one of the most impressive takedowns of the season. Josh Rosen threw for 463 yards and four touchdowns for the Bruins, but Memphis also stole two interceptions from the Heimsan hopeful. He was outplayed by Riley Ferguson, who led Memphis to the upset with 398 yards and six touchdowns on 23-of-38 passing. The defense came up big in the final 10 minutes to preserve the victory for the Tigers.
Now Memphis has an FCS game against Southern Illinois in Week 4 before the start of their American Athletic Conference schedule. The Tigers open conference play with the make-up game on September 30 at UCF. The two AAC hopefuls face a tough test to open their respective campaigns as each tries to get a leg up in the league race. Since only conference champions are considered for the Group of Five bowl bid, one team will likely be eliminated before October.
