Florida football defeated Vanderbilt in Week 5 without much help from any of its quarterbacks. What else did we learn from the Gators’ win?

The Gators won what for them must be called a shootout against Vanderbilt on Saturday. Two defensively minded football teams combined for 52 points and eight touchdowns.

After tying the game at 17-17 in the second quarter, the Gators locked down the Vandy offense in the second half, surrendering just one touchdown after the break. Florida is now 3-0 in SEC play with wins over Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt while the Commodores have fallen to 3-2 and have yet to win in SEC play.

Here are three things we learned from their Week 5 game.

1.  Vanderbilt still has some work to do

The Commodores began the season 3-0 before running into the buzzsaw that is the Alabama Crimson Tide. Vandy was utterly obliterated in front of their home crowd by Alabama in Week 4, losing 59-0 without much in the way of silver linings. A second consecutive loss to Florida has them officially at the bottom of the SEC East.

Frankly, that’s about where the Commodores should be right now. Derek Mason has done an incredible job building this program up, but the gap between the Commodores and the cream of the crop in the SEC East is still substantial. The Gators simply out-talented his team in the second half on Saturday. That’s something that no amount of coaching will fix.
