Lee Corso’s College GameDay headgear pick: Clemson vs. Virginia Tech
By Tim Kaiser
Lee Corso made his Week 5 College GameDay headgear selection. Did he pick the No. 2 Clemson Tigers or the No. 12 Hokies in front of their home crowd?
Lee Corso must love Virginia Tech. He is perfect when picking the Hokies. Even more astounding, he’s also perfect picking against them. This suggests either Corso got lucky or he had a pretty great read on how good Virginia Tech was at any given time. That was under Frank Beamer though. Does he have that same magic now that Justin Fuente is at the helm?
Corso is 4-0 when picking the Hokies at home. The only time he picked against them was in 2005. Miami handed its former Big East rival their only ACC loss of the season. The last time College GameDay came to Blacksburg was the 2007 season opener against East Carolina. It was probably easy for Corso to take the ninth-ranked Hokies against the unranked Pirates. However, ECU gave them more than they bargained for in a 17-7 game. Virginia Tech was last featured on GameDay for the Battle at Bristol last season. They were blown out by Tennessee 45-24.
Clemson may be featured on GameDay more often than Virginia Tech, but Corso has a lot more trouble handicapping their games. He is 2-2 when picking the Tigers and 4-6 when picking against them. One of those losses came two weeks ago. Corso took Louisville at home, but Kelly Bryant outplayed Lamar Jackson with help from his defense, and Clemson rolled to a 47-21 win.
Virginia Tech and Clemson enter their matchup with matching 4-0 records, but they got there in drastically different ways. Clemson has two wins over ranked opponents and two conference wins (Louisville is both). The Hokies beat a then-ranked West Virgina team in the season opener and three cupcakes since. Clemson is a touchdown favorite.
Corso is 2-2 on the season with his headgear picks. He started off with two wins in Week 1 but dropped his next two. Last week, someone decided to have him dress up as the Statue of Liberty instead of picking a team like normal.
Let’s go to the pick:

Lee Corso is not a dumb man. Clemson beat him two weeks ago, and he was not going to let them beat him again. The old cliché defense travels is an old cliché for a reason. Clemson has a ferocious defensive line that should cause havoc yet again. Will Corso remain perfect predicting Virginia Tech games?
