5. Bryce Love becomes clear-cut favorite for Heisman

Despite missing last week’s contest against Oregon State with an injury, running back Bryce Love still remains on top of the NCAA rushing leaderboards. Love currently leads all FBS running backs with 1387 rushing yards, just 21 yards ahead of San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny.

Love’s absence against Oregon State would appear to have hurt his Heisman Trophy chances as one less game gives the other candidates an extra chance to pad their stats and move into the national spotlight.

Despite the injury, Love’s absence also proved one major consideration: the Cardinal need Love on the field. Stanford survived a Thursday night scare against the lowly Oregon State Beavers, posting just 81 rushing yards and 222 total yards of offense. Stanford’s clear showing of a different team without Love proves he is the team’s most valuable player.

With big games on the schedule, Love will have plenty of chances to have huge performances against elite teams. No other Heisman candidate will have the opportunity Love has the rest of the season and with him already ahead of the pack as it is, there will be just one favorite heading into New York’s Heisman ceremony.
