FAU Football has received more exposure since Lane Kiffin took the helm. In their latest installment the Owls gave betters fits with a self-inflicted safety.

Lane Kiffin, the former offensive coordinator at Alabama among other titles, has brought Florida Atlantic back into the spotlight. The football team is off to a strong start (6-3), but Kiffin has made as much of an impact off the field with the Owls as he has on it.

From Twitter shade and comically awful recruiting videos he has advanced to toying with the emotions and fortunes of college football bettors.

If you placed a bet on Florida Atlantic on Friday night the odds you received were most likely FAU +6.5. Once again the oddsmakers proved they have an uncanny handle on college football. With less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock the Owls led by seven points. That meant those who bet in favor of the home team were less than a minute away from cashing in.

Then this happened:

With that safety the Owls swung blew their 6.5 point cover, winning by just five points.

Coaches say a lot of things. One of them being they don’t pay attention to underdogs and favorites and don’t care for what the media thinks of their program. It could just be another odd coincidence that a decision shifted the fortunes of people across the nation and got the internet talking about him and his program following an otherwise innocuous Conference USA game.

The safety did it’s job. It ran enough time off the clock to keep the Owls in line for the win. But one can’t help but be amused by all the varied ways that Kiffin finds himself in the spotlight. He gets his wish tonight. The national media is talking about him and FAU. And all because of two unnecessary points in a game that most people in the country did not see.
