Florida Football: Is Chip Kelly a good fit for the Gators?
Rumor has it that Chip Kelly could be the next Florida football head coach. There’s a mutual interest, but does Kelly fit with the Gators?
Chip Kelly is a “free agent” to the world of football coaching and after limited success in the National Football League is rumored to be heading back to College Football. The key rumor in that mill is that the Florida Gators and Coach Kelly have mutual interest in Kelly becoming the head football coach.
At this juncture even University of Florida administration has taken to Twitter to address the Chip Kelly rumors:
His response:
The Florida Gators football program has fallen on hard times under the now dismissed leadership of Jim McElwain after winning 19 games in two seasons — the Gators are currently 3-6 and look like they may miss a bowl bid.
The Gator offense never grew under the offensive-minded McElwain and that hurt his reputation as well. Couple that with the suspensions of key players and Scott Stricklin started to look in another direction for Gator Football.
Insert Chip Kelly. Kelly is the offensive guru that turned the Oregon Ducks into a speed-first national power up in Eugene. Kelly’s system didn’t quite have the same impact in the NFL, first failing with the Philadelphia Eagles and then the San Francisco 49ers before taking a season off.
Let’s take a look at why Kelly would work in Gainesville, why it’s a bad fit, and where he would be an even better fit for this new chapter in his career.
