By Dean Mullen
The noise out of Gainesville keeps echoing the sentiment that Chip Kelly is the leading candidate for the Florida football coaching job. Although this my be true, he is simply not the right fit for the Gators, and here’s why.
Actually, there are five reasons why. Granted, Chip Kelly has been an excellent coach at the college level. Moreover, Kelly’s resume is beyond evidence that winning is in his blood.
At Oregon, Kelly posted an impressive 46-7 record there in four years. Twice, he posted a 12-1 record which is astounding. Additionally, Kelly brought his team to a BCS game every year from 2009-2012. Additionally, the last two years he won the Rose Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.
Prior to that, In 2009 and 2010, Kelly brought his Oregon Ducks to the Rose Bowl and the BCS Championship game where he lost to Auburn 22-19. By and large, Florida would be happy with those results for sure.
Of course, Kelly has accomplished everything but win a national championship. Kelly left to coach in the NFL, which didn’t exactly end on a positive note. And that’s not uncommon. There’s been a plethora of college coaches that have failed miserably in the NFL. Most notably: Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier and Lou Holtz. All legendary coaches that couldn’t translate their winning ways to the next level.
However, Kelly is not going into the NFL. Kelly is supposedly close on inking a deal with the University of Florida. Here are the five reasons why Kelly is not the right fit.
