Lee Corso’s College GameDay headgear pick Week 13: Alabama vs. Auburn
By Tim Kaiser
Lee Corso made his College GameDay headgear selection this morning. Did he take No. 1 Alabama or the sixth-ranked Auburn Tigers?
Lee Corso has been a streaky picker this season. His 2017 season of headgear picks has been a series of winning and losing streaks. Corso is 8-4 on the season after a win last week by picking Bucky Badger against Michigan. Can he finish the regular season with one more two-game winning streak?
Alabama has been on College GameDay more than any other school during the show’s run. The Crimson Tide are 26-14 when being featured, including a win in Week 1 against Florida State. Corso picked Big Al in that matchup to start the year 2-0.
Auburn is 8-9 when playing the College GameDay showcase game. Auburn’s last time on the show was the 2014 Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa. The Tigers fell 55-44 to the top-ranked Crimson Tide. The last time GameDay was in Auburn was the Iron Bowl the year prior, the famous 2013 “Kick Six” game.
Lee Corso is 4-3 with his headgear picks in Auburn. He is 2-1 when picking the Tigers and 2-2 picking against them at home. Corso has a 3-1 record when picking Alabama in the Iron Bowl. He has picked the Crimson Tide a record 27 times and has gone 18-9 in those games.
No. 1 Alabama (11-0, 7-0 SEC) is a 5.5 point favorite over No. 6 Auburn (9-2, 6-1 SEC). Not only will this game determine bragging rights across the state of Alabama but also who will represent the SEC West in the SEC Championship game.
Auburn doesn’t let Lee Corso put on the Aubie head, so he would have to put on an Auburn helmet instead of the mascot headgear. Is that the final push he needs to take the favored Crimson Tide and his beloved Big Al on the road in front of a hostile crowd?
Let’s go to the pick:

Corso is a showman more than a prognosticator, so it always surprises me when he picks against what makes the best TV. The headgear pick is just better when it is an actual mascot head. Alabama is favored, so it’s not crazy for him to take them, but I have to think Auburn’s stinginess with the Aubie head has to play a role. A favored Big Al head won out over the love of the crowd and the Auburn helmet. Also, “Sweet Home Alabama” after he makes the pick is always a nice touch.
