A huge discrepancy lies between the recruiting rankings for the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M football, in favor of the Aggies.
Texas A&M football has a huge competition it can partake in during each off-season, now that it’s out of the Big 12 and joined in with the SEC. Defeating the Texas Longhorns on the recruiting trail is one of the most satisfying feeling that the Aggies can have, at least now that the two teams no longer meet on the field for the Lone Star Showdown.
Yet, what the Aggies did on the recruiting trail up to this point for the 2019 class is nothing short of incredible. So far, Texas A&M owns the second-best recruiting class in the nation. That falls in place only behind the Alabama Crimson Tide. This all comes according to 247Sports Team Composite Rankings.
Texas A&M isn’t even that far behind the Crimson Tide in the team rankings. But, a geographic rival in the LSU Tigers is fast approaching. A recent commitment of five-star safety Derek Stingley pushed LSU to the third-best class in the nation.
Interestingly enough, the new biggest conference rival for Texas A&M holds the same spot in the 247Sports recruiting rankings as the Horns did last year. That creates a whole new competition for the Aggies on the recruiting trail. This time around it just comes against a conference opponent instead of a hated rival.
A slow run for the Horns dropped the program back down to the No. 20 class in the nation for the 2019 cycle. Not only is Texas A&M ahead of Texas, it’s leaving the in-state rival in the dust. First-year Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher is doing much better than Texas’ second-year coach Tom Herman.
Moreover, the Aggies do have two five-star commitments in the pipeline so far. More could be on the way. But, it’s safety Brian Williams and offensive tackle Kenyon Green for now. Texas A&M is tied with LSU for having the most five-star commits in a 2019 recruiting class.
The only five-star commit for the Horns is offensive tackle Tyler Johnson. The rest are some scattered four and three-star prospects. Texas is somewhat lacking in both quantity and quality compared to that of the Aggies at this point.

While Texas is likely to pick up some serious momentum on the recruiting trail soon, the Aggies should continue to pull as far ahead here as possible. A big regular season could give Texas the push it needs to lock up a top five class in the nation. Texas A&M is already there, though.
