Texas A&M football is a few key commitments away from having the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation. The Jimbo Fisher is real.

Texas A&M hired Jimbo Fisher to elevate the program to another level. 8-5 was good, but the Aggie brass (and fans) want championships. To win championships you need talent, and Jimbo Fisher is on his way to bringing in an unprecedented amount of talent in his first full class at Texas A&M.

If things break the right way, Texas A&M could have the best class in the nation by the end of July.

The roadmap to the No. 1 class in the nation isn’t all that arduous. It’s going to require winning a few key recruiting battles, but the Aggies have already proven several times they can beat out anyone to get their guy, and that includes Nick Saban. If Texas A&M can secure a few key commitments, they’ll be able to knock Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide from the top spot in the ranks.

Entering the July 4 holiday 247 Sports class rankings put the Aggies at No. 2, one spot behind the Tide. Using the class calculator, the Aggies will jump the Tide if they’re able to haul in these fives players:

  • Jeffery Carter, 4-star cornerback
  • Bobby Wolfe, 4-star cornerback
  • Erick Young, 4-star cornerback
  • Isaiah Spiller, 4-star running back
  • Marcus Stripling, 4-star defensive end

The Aggies are strong favorites to land all five players, with Carter’s recruitment battle the seemingly the closest right now. 247 Sports Crystal Ball projections have the Aggies as at least 75 percent favorites to get all of the other four guys. Wolfe plans to announce on July 3, with Young making his choice public on July 4.

It’s worth noting that’s not an exhaustive list. Texas A&M remains a key player in the recruitment of guys like Nakobe Dean and Dylan Wright, both blue-chip prospects. If it’s not one of those guys it will be someone else. Fisher and Co. have been on a warpath since they arrived in Aggieland. Next stop: No. 1 on the recruiting trail. After that? It’s time for a trophy, or two.
