It was never going to be easy for head coach Dave Clawson when he arrived at Wake Forest. His teams posted 3-9 marks his first two seasons before breaking out in 2016 with a 7-6 record and a bowl victory. Last season the Deacons posted an 8-5 record, their best mark since the 2008 season, culminating with a Belk Bowl victory over Texas A&M.

It seems now Clawson has made winning sustainable. Being in the ACC Atlantic, the Deacons have to face Clemson and Florida State annually. Beating both of those teams in the same season is a tall order. However if the Deacons can continue beating the teams they should, remain competitive against their top foes, and occasionally pull off an upset or two, they should be in good shape. The goals at Wake Forest should be to make bowl appearances, not to compete for ACC titles on a yearly basis.

The Deacons will need to replace key pieces on both sides of the ball this season. Regardless they were a fun team to watch last season and should continue their upward trend this year.
