And the starting quarterback job goes to…

What will be most interesting, is to finally discover who will be the starting quarterback, after several weeks of wondering who would get the nod. As per David McCracken of Hawaii News Now, Rolovich was still keeping everyone guessing earlier this week:

"“A couple (players) know already. He’s gonna have a (number) one on his jersey, I think. Pretty sure he’s gonna have a one on his jersey.”"

Given that all three of the main contenders have a number one on their jersey, it was obvious Rolovich was teasing the media. Although in fairness to him, he was — sort of — being honest when he said a couple of the players already knew.

Consider the initial depth chart, which came out on Tuesday. Hawaii had Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro listed as co-starters under center.

How you perceive this is open to interpretation and somewhat dependent on if you have a positive or negative mindset. Does it equate to both players being outstanding in training camp and having little to choose between them, or does it mean no one has really risen to the challenge?

Is it even possible the Rolovich has decided to give McDonald and Cordeiro a half each on Saturday? Given the quality of the opposition, combined with this season essentially representing a rebuild, anything is possible at this point.

When push comes to shove, however, we predict McDonald will be the starter. How long he holds onto the job though, is another matter altogether.

Irrespective of who does get the start, they face a significant challenge behind an offensive line which only has one returning starter. It doesn’t help that they won’t be able to call on the services of Diocemy Saint Juste for some balance, after he set a single-season school record for rushing yards during 2017.
