Stanford football opens its 2018 season looking for revenge for an upset loss last season at the hands of the San Diego State Aztecs.

David Shaw and Stanford football are coming off a Pac-12 title appearance, but the Cardinal unfortunately fell short against the USC Trojans.

With Sam Darnold gone and USC looking to rebuild with a freshman quarterback, the conference could be up for grabs — though Jake Browning and Washington will have something to say about that. Stanford’s quest for an undefeated season and potential playoff berth begins on Friday evening as San Diego State comes to town.

The battle between Stanford and San Diego State didn’t quite go the Cardinal’s way a season ago as the Aztecs pulled off the upset, but will history repeat itself?

Take a look at our three bold predictions for the matchup.

3. KJ Costello passes for over 300 yards

As a sophomore, KJ Costello looked like the quarterback of the future for Stanford. He passed for over 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions while showing calmness and poise in the pocket.

Now that he no longer has to wait to get an opportunity with Keller Chryst gone, he’s going to take full advantage.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get a chance to have a say in last season’s 20-17 upset loss at San Diego State, but that’ll change this year as he proves himself as a valuable commodity in Week 1, passing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns.

San Diego State’s defensive backfield is going to have a heck of a time trying to slow down the Cardinal passing game, especially with all the options Costello has to work with.
