Florida Football: Gators triumphant in Dan Mullen return to Starkville
1. Florida has yet to find a go-to pass catcher
Feleipe Franks attempted 31 passes. He was unable to find the endzone, but he did connect with one defender on an interception and 11 different Florida pass catchers. Add in a 20-yard touchdown from by Kadarius Toney to Moral Stephens and you get 12 different Gators that tallied at least one reception against Mississippi State.
Having options is great, but that many different hands getting touches is usually indicative of a 40-point blowout with second, third and even fourth team players getting their chance at playing time. Florida won by seven and never led by more than a touchdown. They desperately needed someone, anyone, to break out and take control of this game. Nobody did.
None of the Florida pass catchers caught more than four passes or registered more than 50 receiving yards. The two that averaged more than 16 yards per grab each were limited to one reception.
It’s clear that the current iteration of the Florida offense has some work to do before it’s up to Dan Mullen’s rigorous standards. They have some talent in their receiving corps, they just need someone to make some plays and separate themselves from the pack.
