Stanford Football: 3 takeaways from tight win over Arizona State
1. Stanford is still in the Pac-12 hunt
While the Cardinal just narrowly came out of Tempe with a win, it is still in the race for the Pac-12 North. Stanford already took down one piece of the puzzle in Oregon and another in-conference win has it still in a strong position to make the championship game.
The Cardinal still face two more tough tests in the next two weeks against Washington State and Washington but for now, the Cardinal are safe. A loss against the Sun Devils may have put them in a tough spot moving forward.
While the running game wasn’t all that effective Thursday night, the passing game made up for it. K.J. Costello continued to show he can be a force through the air, throwing for 231 yards and a touchdown. He also completed an impressive 76 percent of his passes which is highly efficient.
His lone touchdown pass of the night was good enough to vault the Cardinal over the Sun Devils and the pass surprisingly went to someone other than his favorite target in J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.
Despite the late-game scare, a strong defensive showing and a productive enough offense will be huge for Stanford for the remainder of the season as it hopes to return to prominence in the Pac-12.
The road won’t be easy but one game, such as this one which proved to possibly turn things around, could mean a lot for the coming weeks.
