Washington football is moving backward, dropping a road contest to Cal and falling out of first place in the Pac-12 North.

Washington went from a College Football Playoff hopeful to the middle of a murky Pac-12 North. The Huskies were effectively eliminated from their ultimate prize when they lost to Oregon. Now they’ve been pushed to the brink of extinction in the Pac-12 Title race with a loss to Cal.

The road team struck first with quarterback Jake Browning connecting with Ty Jones midway through the first quarter, the only offensive touchdown of the game. Cal tacked on field goals and a defensive score before Washington rounded out the scoring with a meaningless chip shot field goal tacked on near the end of regulation.

This was a low-scoring, defensive slugfest with poorer offensive play than outstanding defensive showings. The end result was another defeat for Washington and more questions about Browning and the rest of this veteran-filled squad.

Chris Petersen’s team seems to be moving backward. What did we learn about Washington from this disappointing loss and what should this team do at the quarterback position moving forward?
