Texas A&M Football: Aggies regain swagger with win over Ole Miss
By Shelbie Warr
2. Williams, Sternberger and Davis shine bright in a must-win game.
These three were big-time playmakers in crucial spots for the Aggies. In a game where the quarterback and the secondary struggled once again, these three were exactly what this team needed.
Before we get to them, I’d also like to give Jhamon Ausbon the recognition he deserves. He didn’t find the end zone in his first game back since injuring his foot vs. Arkansas but he made crucial catches to keep drives going. He finished with four catches for 58 yards. Welcome back Ausbon!
Trayveon Williams
Let’s start with the Aggies junior running back Trayveon Williams. He finished this game with 31 carries for 228 yards and one touchdown, including the score which put the game on ice for the Maroon and White. The Aggies were up by seven with the ball and Ole Miss needed a critical stop, Williams wasn’t interested in giving that to them though. His 46-yard touchdown run took all of 12 seconds off the clock, but put the Aggies up 14 with about 1:36 left in the game.
Williams ran hard and fought tooth and nail the entire game and earned his second 1,000-yard rushing season in three years at A&M.
Jace Sternberger
Tight end Jace Sternberger once again impressed and made big-time plays for this team. Friendly reminder that he was not a starter at the JUCO level and is now one of the best tight ends in the nation. Big shout out to Jimbo Fisher for finding a way to get this kid to Aggieland in his first season as the head coach.
He finished this game as the leading receiver for the Aggies with four catches for 76 yards. He also was a big-time blocker, keeping drives alive by making running lanes for the likes of Williams and freshman Jashaun Corbin.
Quartney Davis
This kid has been through hell and back as he has battled through injuries since he arrived on campus in 2016. He didn’t make much noise in 2017, but has emerged as a big time playmaker for Jimbo Fisher and Darrell Dickey in 2018. He may have only had 3 catches for a total of 25 yards, but two of those catches were touchdowns.
