In the eyes of the committee, Georgia Football was a win away from the College Football Playoff, but should one of the best four teams be left out of the field?

More: Final Bowl projections entering Selection Sunday

Last season Georgia and Alabama celebrated on Selection Sunday when the SEC became the first conference to send multiple teams to the College Football Playoff in its’ short history. The two college football powers ran through the SEC with relative ease but didn’t meet in the conference championship game because of the Tide were upset by Auburn. Still, the two Top 4 teams entering the final rankings remained. That wasn’t the case this year.

Georgia fell by one score to Alabama in the 2018 SEC Championship Game and with it saw their Playoff hopes extinguished. Their loss to LSU earlier in the season meant the Bulldogs had two losses, something which has been an automatic disqualifier for Playoff access so far.

Given precedent, omitting Georgia is understandable, but that doesn’t make it right. Those who watched Georgia play all season and recognize their status as one of the most complete teams in the sport know how good the Bulldogs have been this season. Georgia is one of the best teams in the nation. They’d be favored to beat Oklahoma, Ohio State, UCF and every other team who believed they had a shot at the No. 4 spot.

Leaving one of the best teams out of the Playoff is an indictment on the process itself. On paper, Georgia didn’t check enough boxes an adhere to the unwritten rules of the current system. That might mean it’s time for the system to change. Whether by means of recalibration or expanding the field, a team like Georgia should be in the Playoff field. Period.
