The selection for the four teams in the College Football Playoff should’ve been clear, with Georgia football not included in the top-six even.

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee had a tall task once again to determine who got the fourth and final spot in the field. This year’s Playoff field boiled down to three teams vying for the final spot including the Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia football, and Ohio State Buckeyes. Georgia football was the one team among the three to lose its conference title game.

It seemed like as soon as the SEC Championship Game was decided between the Dawgs and the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Playoff field would boil down to two teams. Georgia had two losses, coming against Alabama and the LSU Tigers, which should have effectively eliminated them from contention for the final Playoff spot.

Oklahoma’s case was clear with the Selection Committee, since it took down a quality opponent in the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship Game. Texas was the only team that took down the Sooners in the regular season, and it came at a neutral site game in the dying seconds.

Ohio State took down the Northwestern Wildcats in the Big Ten Championship Game to move to 12-1 on the season. The case against Ohio State was clear since it had the most embarrassing loss of any of the teams set in the top six from the Selection Committee. In front of a national audience, the Purdue Boilermakers dismantled the Buckeyes by the final score of 49-20. That likely doomed Ohio State’s Playoff chances when it was all said and done.

Georgia looked good for a Playoff spot heading into conference championship week. But, it had one task to get into the field among the four teams and it didn’t do what it needed to. Georgia needed to beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, but couldn’t hang on for an eventual 35-28 defeat.

Ohio State should’ve been the final team in consideration compared to the Sooners. Georgia holds a resume that possibly shouldn’t keep them above a team like the undefeated UCF Knights. The Dawgs just had too many opportunities to get itself into Playoff position, and couldn’t take advantage.

The detrimental loss to Purdue did mean that Oklahoma was more deserving for the Playoff field than Ohio State. But, Ohio State and even UCF should’ve been slotted above Georgia after it fell short against two teams from the same division in Alabama and LSU.
