Ohio State football lost to a 6-6 Purdue team and missed the College Football Playoff a concerning pattern for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

One year ago Ohio State was blasted by Iowa, seemingly out of nowhere, ending the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff dreams before they ever truly began. The one damaging loss haunted this team through the offseason but they weren’t able to shake their fatal flaw in 2018 either.

2018 saw Iowa replaced with Purdue. Jeff Brohm’s Boilermakers played the role of spoiler this time around, knocking the previously perfect Buckeyes from the undefeated rank and ending their Playoff hopes at midseason once more.

At risk of stating the obvious, finishing an entire college football season undefeated is hard. Not even Nick Saban and the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide make it through unscathed every year. But there is a difference between losing to the best of the best and completely forgetting to show up on a random Saturday.

Ohio State no-showed against Purdue and vanished against Maryland, too. The Terps weren’t able to complete the upset, but the mere fact the game was in question up to the final pass is another nail in the coffin of Urban Meyer’s ceiling.

Even when the Buckeyes won it all in 2014 they suffered a puzzling early-season loss to unranked Virginia Tech. Meyer doesn’t have the discipline needed to run an elite college football program, not anymore. With rumors about the end of his tenure circling, it might be time for Ohio State to find someone else and move on.

There’s no doubt Urban Meyer is a great football coach. On any given Saturday he’s proven he has the prowess to beat just about anyone. Unfortunately for him, it takes 14 or 15 games to win a national championship. One big hiccup isn’t going to fly.
