Florida Football: Gators fans honored among SEC’s best in Fandom250
By Dana Becker
There is nothing like rankings to get people talking, and that’s exactly what the FanSided Fandom250 presents. Where does Florida football shake out?
Take Florida for example, as Gator Nation landed 18th in terms of all colleges ranked, which is likely to not sit too well with some, while being the perfect number for others.
Florida is one of the more balanced athletic programs in the nation, as Dan Mullen has them back among the elite in college football, the basketball team is a constant contender to compete in the NCAA Tournament, and the baseball squad makes appearances in Omaha for the College World Series on a regular basis.
Under Mullen this past season, the Gators went 9-3, earning a spot in the upcoming Peach Bowl against Michigan. Florida is currently ranked 10th, giving them a great chance to improve upon that final number if they take care of the Wolverines.
Florida finished in a tie for second with Kentucky in the SEC East, two full games behind Georgia. They earned wins over Mississippi State and LSU in back-to-back weekends, along with four consecutive victories to finish the year, highlighted by a resounding 41-14 thumping of rival Florida State inside Doak Campbell Stadium.
As the creators of the “Chomp,” it appears as if Mullen has Florida right back in contention after a difficult 4-7 season in 2017. Since 2005, the school has played in two BCS Championships and won 10-plus games five times, with the last 10-win season coming in 2015.
Florida owns 732 wins as a program, ranking them among the best of the best in the nation. When you think of college football and some of the top traditions in all of the sport, the chomp and “The Swamp” rank right up there with the elite.
Of note, the Gators do check in one spot behind Ohio State and former Florida head coach Urban Meyer, along with three positions behind LSU in terms of SEC ranking.
