4. A Showdown in Starkville: September 29, 2018

This game was a big deal for both sets of fans and if you don’t know why well, I really don’t know what to tell you. Dan Mullen was the head coach at Mississippi State for quite a while and him leaving the program to head back to Gainesville, taking the Florida head coaching gig, didn’t go over well with the Bulldog faithful. It went over extremely well with the Gator fans though, because he has taken this program to new heights.

So why is this game in our countdown? This one came before the Gators cracked into the rankings for the first time that season. This one was when Mississippi State sat at No. 23 in the nation according to the AP Poll. This one pitted a program against its former coach and his new program. Man, was it exciting?

The Florida defense was, unsurprisingly, the star of this one. That unit has emerged as one of the better defenses in the country and had quite a bit to do with the Gators top 10 finish for the 2018 season. On offense, it was a slow grind to victory.  However, that is the way it is for most Florida games. Their offense isn’t the greatest, but it does enough to get the job done and that is what happened here.
