Former Florida football head coach Steve Spurrier was never affraid to ruffle feathers. The old ball coach made a jab at Tennessee following an AAF game.

For better or worse, the SEC has stuck by its somewhat pompous tagline “It just means more”. While somewhat pandering to the masses of football-infatuated southerners, there’s more than a grain a truth in the expansive slogan. Even when the college football season has long since ended, the SEC finds a way to snag the spotlight.

The old ball coach has returned to the sideline as the commander in chief of the Orlando Apollos, the top ranked team in the newly formed Alliance of American Football. His squad just won their second game, taking down the San Antonio Commanders on the road in front of a reasonably strong crowd at the Alamodome.

When commenting on the atmosphere of the crowd during the game in San Antonio, the former Florida football head coach couldn’t help but take a shot at a former rival. “It was just as loud as Rocky Top to tell you the truth,” Spurrier said, before adding “I know the Swamp is maybe a little bit louder than here.”

Equivocating the famed Neyland Stadium to a partially filled Alamodome might not come off as dismissive at first blush. But Spurrier doubled down, making sure to point out the Swamp was louder than the Vols’ home turf. Somehow, when asked about the crowd of an AAF game in Texas, Spurrier found a way to throw some shade at Tennessee. It just means more.

The AAF is in its infancy as a league, but Spurrier has undoubtedly given the young league credibility. His antics on the sideline are good for at least one good quote a weekend, if not more. He’s as close to must-see football tv as there will ever be in mid-spring.
