Former Oklahoma football star Baker Mayfield might be taking that whole “never graduate” thing to heart with his recent comments on Texas, Sam Ehlinger.

Despite being born and raised in Austin, Texas there’s one team inside the capital city of the Lone Star State that Baker Mayfield still holds some animosity towards the Texas Longhorns.

Never one to shy away from controversy, the former Heisman trophy winner has held a grudge against the Burnt Orange since not receiving an offer to play for the Horns out of high school. The lack of an offer came despite Mayfield playing down the street at TXHSFB powerhouse Lake Travis. That disdain only intensified when the polarizing pocket passer transferred to the University of Oklahoma after a brief stint as a walk-on at Texas Tech.

A fiery competitor, Mayfield used the fact that he was overlooked as fuel to carve up the Longhorn defense every time they shared the field. In four career matchups, the future No. 1 overall pick averaged 285 yards through the air and scored seven touchdowns. Mayfield’s teams went 2-2 in those games.

His personal success in the Red River Rivalry apparently did not dim any of his sour feelings towards that school in Austin, however.

A year removed from a groundbreaking rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield took some time out of his offseason schedule to rehash his feelings towards the Horns, the rivalry, and in particularly, UT quarterback Sam Ehlinger. As you can expect, he did not disappoint.

While sitting down with Normans’ SportsTalk 1400, the franchise QB spewed off hot takes after being asked if third-year head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns were championship contenders heading into next season.

“I’m so sick of that crap,” Mayfield said. “(Texas fans) said that after they beat Notre Dame a couple of years ago and they only won two or three games after that”.

When told that Ehlinger proclaimed the university was ‘back’ after defeating Georgia in the Sugar bowl last season, he held no punches towards his fellow signal caller.

“He couldn’t even beat Lake Travis (in high school), so I really don’t care about his opinion on anything (when it comes to) winning… That’ll stir the pot,” Mayfield quipped. Knowing he’d clearly ruffle some feathers, he added “(Ehlinger) doesn’t like me and I hope he knows I don’t like him either”.

As you could imagine, the Cleveland QB’s harsh words solicited quite the response from the Sooner and Longhorn fanbases…

While Mayfield is on the heels of an intriguing first year in the pros after throwing for nearly 3,800 yards and 30 touchdowns, Ehlinger is entering his junior season in Austin with some hefty expectations of a shot at the Heisman.

As some you know I’ll never root for the Horns, Elhinger included, but I can’t even fathom how fascinating the handshake would be between these two at the Heisman ceremony in New York this December.
