Florida Football: 5 most gut-wrenching Gator losses of past decade
5. Kentucky ends the streak (2018)
Since 1986, it didn’t matter where the game was played, who played in the game or who coached the game. It didn’t matter how good Kentucky had been the rest of the season or how many points they were leading by with 10 seconds left. In a crazy and unpredictable sport such as college football, one result could be counted on year after year: Florida always beat Kentucky.
The Wildcats’ ability to somehow, someway lose their yearly bout with the Gators became consistent not-top-10 fodder for the whole college football world. That is, until Kentucky finally exorcised all their demons and buried Florida 27-17 in 2018 – in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, no less.
In the grand scheme of the 2018 season, Florida’s loss to Kentucky wasn’t an unforgivable mar, especially considering the Wildcats were a top-ten team and secured a New Year’s Day bowl win by the end of the season. In fact, a rebuilding Florida program under a brand-new coach in Dan Mullen probably should have lost the game.
However, the historical nature of losing a 31-game win streak smarted for Gator Nation. In an ironic turn, though, the Gators produced their best season of the 2010s after the loss to the Wildcats.
