Florida football cleaned some things up from its Week 0 win over Miami to throttle UT Martin in Week 2. It’s time to completely overreact.
The first game of the 2019 season was a good one as Florida beat Miami in an underrated rivalry game. It kicked off the year on the right note and gave fans a dose of what to expect from each team. After a bye between Week 0 and Week 2 for the Gators and Hurricanes, one side improved while the other regressed.
Florida is the team that got better and ironed out the kinks from a roller-coaster opening win over Miami while the Hurricanes dropped to 0-2 after a loss to North Carolina.
The Gators dismantled UT Martin in Gainesville 45-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season and the overreactions have been flooding in. Here are a few of the biggest overreactions from the weekend.
3. Iverson Clement needs a bigger role
This might be one of the more reasonable overreactions, but even though he looked good in limited action, the Florida backfield is loaded and fans need to realize that.
The depth chart is holding Clement back from being a breakout star, but that’s OK if the backfield can still put up 200-plus yards per game on the ground. Frankly put, the Gators don’t need him to put up big numbers right now because they have Lamical Perine, Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis.
Clement might need more than one carry, but this came against UT Martin so it’s not like he needs to extensively see the field in order for the Gators to win — they were already up big. He did finished second on the team with 41 rushing yards on a single carry. He has special talent, but he isn’t needed against lesser opponents.
We’ll see what kind of role he has against the likes of Georgia or, heck, even Kentucky next week. Maybe Clement does need a larger role, but the matchup with UT Martin didn’t require it.
