Losers

Loser: Michigan State (No. 18 to unranked)

Wow, this was a disappointing one. For the second straight year, Arizona State knocked off Michigan State and it was demoralizing, to say the least. They made the field goal to send the game to overtime, but a penalty forced a re-kick that was missed. It doesn’t get much easier for this team either, even with the strong defense that they field week in and week out. I’m not sure that Sparty will find their way back into the rankings this season.

Loser: USC (No. 24 to unranked)

BYU played spoiler again this week and this time it was USC that they ruined everything for. USC went from a team in the Pac-12 that could maybe make a push this season to one with a coach that no one would be surprised if he was fired before the season ends. With Utah and Washington on the schedule in the next two weeks, it doesn’t look like it’s going to get much better for the Trojans and Clay Helton.

Loser: Maryland (No. 21 to unranked)

This is one that I absolutely did not expect, but man was it disappointing to see. After putting up 79 and 63 points in the first two weeks, everyone expected them to roll over Temple, just like they had their first two weeks. That was not the case though, as they fell to Temple 20-17. Just as quickly as they made an appearance in the Top 25, they were gone and it won’t get any easier. An upset of Penn State though would go a long way in Week 4.
