Florida Football: 3 overreactions from comeback win over Kentucky
1. SEC title hopes are dashed with Feleipe Franks injury
This may have been the most common overreaction, seeing as the Gators no longer had their “improving” quarterback for the remainder of the season after he dislocated his ankle.
It was an ugly injury and it stirred up some emotions on the Gator sidelines shortly after, but the team rallied to come from down 21-10 to blank the Wildcats in the fourth quarter on a 19-0 run. That come-from-behind win with backup quarterback Kyle Trask leading the way was huge for this team’s morale and it showed they can win without Franks.
Still, though, it was only Kentucky which was also playing its backup quarterback after Terry Wilson’s season-ending injury.
The Gators’ SEC title hopes took a huge hit as Franks seemed to be hitting his stride and his experience was something that set him apart from the rest of the quarterback room.
Trask is a junior who had 22 career attempts before 2019 and Emory Jones has played minimally throughout his Florida career.
Can Florida still make a run at the SEC title without Franks? Absolutely, but it’s not going to be quite that easy anymore relying on backup quarterbacks.
