. . (2-1). vs. Virginia. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. 5. player. 819

Notre Dame is coming off a close loss to Georgia, which severely diminished their playoff hopes. They now return to South Bend to face Virginia. The Irish are 12.5-point favorites over the visiting Cavaliers.

The Irish have wins over Louisville and New Mexico. If they want to get back into the playoff discussion, winning out is the only way and even that might not be enough. Quarterback Ian Book has played fairly well, completing 61 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns to only two interceptions. But both of those turnovers occurred in the Georgia game, proving to be costly.

Virginia enters the game undefeated at 4-0. They opened the season with a road conference win against Pitt. After an easy victory over William & Mary, they needed comebacks against Florida State and Old Dominion. The Monarchs led 17-0 before the Cavaliers scored the remaining 28 points in the game for the victory.

It would seem Virginia may be living on borrowed time and are due for a loss. They are also getting the Irish at a bad time, after a loss and eager to get back into the win column. But stranger things have happened. The Cavaliers have a very good defense and Bryce Perkins is a good enough quarterback to lead his team to an upset.

This one should be a good one to watch Saturday afternoon.
