3. Florida-Auburn had all trappings of classic defensive battle

The two teams seemed ready to duke it out on offense in this interdivisional battle at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. In front of a partisan crowd, though, only Florida seemed ready to carry out that type of game for all four quarters.

Going up against freshman quarterback Bo Nix, the Gators defense had a field day teeing off on the youngster. Nix completed fewer than half of his passes, going 11-of-27 for 145 passing yards. He threw three costly interceptions to the Florida secondary, including one that Shawn Davis returned 41 yards to set the Gators offense up in the red zone for a quick touchdown and another on Auburn’s final drive of the game.

They also kept Auburn from really getting their running game going. JaTarvious Whitlow heated up a bit more in the second half, but he was still held to just 81 rushing yards on 18 carries and was kept out of the end zone over the 60 minutes.

It was a disappointing way to go out of the ranks of unbeaten teams for Auburn, but the Tigers simply proved incapable of converting whatever little momentum they were able to generate into points on the scoreboard.
