Big 12 Football Power Rankings, Week 7: Baylor sheds “pretender” tag
By Dante Pryor
Kansas is still Kansas, but it gave Oklahoma a good quarter and a half. Look, Kansas has a long way to go before they win more than two or three games. They don’t have the talent, or the depth to compete with any team in the Big 12, yet.
The news coming out of Lawrence is the termination of offensive coordinator Les Koenning and the promotion of Brent Dearmon. This must have been in hopes of improving an offense ranked 101st in the country in scoring. They are off this week, and then they get Texas. This is just a feeling, but their issues with scoring points and allowing points might be more than scheme. You need players and Les Miles doesn’t have them.
First-year Wildcats head coach Chris Klieman has lost his first two conference games at Kansas State. What is troubling is the Wildcats are averaging 12.5 points in conference play. Not considering their games against Bowling Green or Nicholls, they scored 31 points against Mississippi State in Starkville. Maybe we learned more about the Bulldogs that day than we did the Wildcats.
Flat-out, the ‘Cats need to figure out a way to score points. The defense hasn’t been terrible, but it will get worse as the season goes on if they are constantly on the field because the offense can’t put together drives. They get TCU — a team that can score — next week.
The Horned Frogs are one of the more confusing teams in the country to figure out. They gave Purdue the business at Ross-Ade, dropped the Iron Skillet to the Mustangs, dominated Kansas –and they should have — and looked awful for 3.5 quarters against Iowa State.
Gary Patterson needs to put all his chips in on one quarterback. Freshman Max Duggan gave them a spark against Iowa State. He’s a freshman which means he’s prone to mistakes, but take your lumps this season and roll with him. The Horned Frogs are off this week; they should take this week to settle on a starting quarterback before they travel to the Little Apple to take on Kansas State.
So, yeah, that’s keep the topic of confusing teams going. The Red Raiders got bodied by Arizona, whipped by Oklahoma and then contained Chuba Hubbbard on their way to a home win against Oklahoma State? Oh, I almost forgot that Tech did it without starting quarterback Alan Bowman.
Texas Tech goes to Waco for the first time since 2007 and this could be a fun game if the Red Raiders that played against the ‘Pokes show up. Texas Tech backup quarterback Jett Duffey is fun to watch, and Bears quarterback Charlie Brewer has been cleared to play, so this one could be a must-watch on Saturday.
