With Boise State falling in the rankings, the top college football Group of Five spots are up for grabs. Who will have their hopes dashed in Week 9?

The Group of Five is looking a whole lot different this year than in years past. UCF has taken two early losses on the season that have both been in conference play to all but eliminate them from NY6 bowl contention. Meanwhile, Boise State took one of the most shocking losses against BYU last week against their third-string quarterback Baylor Romney.

Now that two of the heavyweights are on the outside looking in, we have a chance to look at who has emerged as some of the favorites. Coming in at the top spot in the Group of Five is SMU who has gone undefeated and finds themselves at 7-0. With transfer quarterback Shane Buechele from Texas, SMU has looked great thus far.

The next team behind the Mustangs is the Cincinnati Bearcats. Taking an early loss to Ohio State in a crushing blow where they got shut out, they have since rebounded and won six straight. Cincinnati has taken down UCF and is in the driver’s seat in the AAC. The only other team ranked ahead of the fallen Boise State at No. 21 is Appalachian State. App State will have to earn some style points in order to be considered ahead of some one-loss teams at the end of the year.

Chaos has officially ensued in the Group of Five as each time fights for the NY6 birth. Loads of questions with the top teams and tons of matchups still to come with some of the conference leaders.
