Florida Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over Vanderbilt
A week after losing to Georgia, Florida football bounced back to beat Vanderbilt in dominant fashion. What’d we learn from the Gators’ win?
Just one week after losing to Georgia in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, Florida bounced back to demolish Vanderbilt 56-0 in Gainesville.
This is the win the team needed heading into the home stretch and while a division title and appearance in the SEC Championship is highly unlikely (Georgia would have to lose two more games), it was the perfect way to bounce back from an emotional rivalry loss.
Dan Mullen has changed the culture in Gainesville because in years past, a tough loss in emotional fashion would have derailed the Gators’ season. Not this time as Vanderbilt didn’t stand a chance even after keeping it close in the first half.

3. Defense was scary good
After a few weeks of having an average defensive output, Florida’s unit stepped up against the Commodores. Sure, this was expected, but the Gators absolutely suffocated Vanderbilt, giving them little to no room to run, pass and making the offense uncomfortable and off-balance the entire afternoon.
Vanderbilt completed about a third of its passes and rushed for about a yard per carry. That’s not a winning recipe for an offense on the road against the No. 10 team in the nation.
But that’s not exactly just a bad game for the Commodores rather a great game for Florida’s defense. Vanderbilt finished the game with 128 total yards and 12 first downs which led to zero points. This could be a momentum-builder for the Gator defense.
