2. Virginia Tech Hokies (Not ranked)

Virginia Tech has gotten love in the AP Top 25 as the No. 25 team and is the first team on the outside of the Coaches Poll, but there was belief that the Hokies would have gotten the nod in the playoff poll after arguably the best stretch of football in the Justin Fuente era.

At the beginning of the year, there was talk about Fuente being on the hot seat and having to look for a new job, but he has salvaged that in just a handful of weeks.

Virginia Tech went from 2-2 to start the season with a 45-10 loss against Duke — the most embarrassing loss of the Fuente era — to 7-3 with the lone loss in the past six games a one-point road loss against Notre Dame. That’s quite impressive, especially considering the Hokies probably should have beaten the Irish.

Imagine if Virginia Tech got a rematch with Duke at this point in the year — it would probably be a 35-point win in favor of the Hokies.

I’m on board with Virginia Tech getting some rankings love and it was disappointing to see a four-loss USC team in the playoff poll because of a win against Cal.
