Stanford football: 3 potential transfer destinations for KJ Costello
1. Florida State Seminoles
If you could use two words to describe Florida State since the end of the Jimbo Fisher era, it would most likely be ‘dumpster fire’. After Fisher left the Seminoles in 2017, then-Oregon head coach Willie Taggart was hired and there was a glimmer of hope in Tallahassee. The hope was gone quickly and Taggart was run out of town before he could even complete his second season in charge.
Now, they turn to Mike Norvell, who they hired from Memphis, to turn everything around and getting a quarterback could jumpstart it all.
The situation in the quarterback room for the Noles this season has been a nightmare. Alex Hornibrook and James Blackman have taken significant snaps as QB1 and neither have been great. This year’s recruiting class was the first class to include a quarterback since the 2017 cycle. If Costello were to spend his final year at Florida State, he would likely be the guy from day one.
What could possibly keep Costello away is Florida State’s offensive line. Plain and simple, it was awful in 2019. According to footballoutsiders.com, the Seminoles’ sack rate was 9.4 percent, ranking 114th in the country. Giving up 44 sacks last season, surprisingly two ACC teams (Miami and Syracuse) allowed more, but the Seminoles’ offensive line gave up the sixth-most sacks in the country. The offensive line would have to improve if Costello were to come in. Even the best quarterbacks in the country would struggle with an offensive line like the Seminoles.
This would be the riskiest destination for Costello, but also a place where he would no doubt be the guy from the start. He would have the opportunity to be the beginning of the new Florida State under Mike Norvell. While this may not turn into a national championship chance like it would at LSU or Georgia, it would be the destination for Costello would face the easiest competition.
The Seminoles are no doubt a rebuilding project and will struggle next season. Costello will make that an easier process.
