Florida Football: 3 takeaways from Orange Bowl win over Virginia
By Zach Bigalke
3. Kyle Trask overcame slow start to lead Florida to victory
With Feleipe Franks pursuing his options away from Gainesville, the Florida starting role is pretty much Trask’s to lose heading into 2020. Given that he has one more year of eligibility and the opportunity to bolster his draft stock, Trask put in the type of performance that could give Florida a major bowl boost and incumbent quarterback boost heading into the 2020 season.
It wasn’t all perfect for Trask threw an interception on the second series of the game that Virginia turned into seven points on the next play after taking over possession. He still ended the first half with 153 yards through the air and a touchdown to atone for his pick, completing 15 of his 26 passing attempts before the intermission.
Trask was hit or miss once again in the second half. The quarterback went 9-of-13 in the second half to finish the night with 305 yards through the air. Trask also punched in a rushing score from a yard out to regain a double-digit lead for Florida with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
When it mattered most, though, Trask came through. In the fourth quarter he turned around after a Bryce Perkins interception and threw a 53-yard strike to Van Jefferson to put Florida into Cavaliers territory.
It wasn’t always pretty, but Trask was certainly effective on Monday night in Miami.
