3. Offensive woes

For the most “expected” disappointment of the 2019 season, I give you the offense.

Auburn elected to go with true Freshman Bo Nix as the starting quarterback under first-year offensive coordinator, Kenny Dillingham. Of course there would be kinks to work out.

No one really knew who was calling plays. Was it Head Coach Gus Malzahn? Or was it the 29-year-old Dillingham? Could it have been a mix of both? Who knows. But the inconsistency of play calling played a role in this season’s outcome.

Auburn failed to have a 1,000-yard rusher for the second year in a row after having one for seven straight years prior. Throw that in with Bo Nix only throwing for 16 touchdowns, the offense just didn’t have the wheels turning in the right direction.

A solution seems to be on its way, though. Dillingham left Auburn to join his former boss, Mike Norvell, as the offensive coordinator, opening the door for former Arkansas head coach Chad Morris to take over the vacancy. Early on, we have learned that Malzahn plans to let Morris call plays for the offense.
