Long gone are the days of Benny Snell Jr., but that doesn’t mean Kentucky has to settle for average play at running back. That’s where Michael Drennen II comes in.

The Wildcats did have a 1,000-yard rusher in Lynn Bowden Jr. in 2019, but he played primarily quarterback when Terry Wilson went down. He was more of a run-first quarterback, but he had help behind him in Asim Rose, Kavosiey Smoke and Cristopher Rodriguez Jr.

All three of those backs are returning and they could each see a role in the offense but none have taken control of the starting job. I’m not saying that Drennen II is going to come in and win the RB1 job, but he’s more of an all-purpose back than the other three.

In fact, Drennen can catch the ball out of his backfield and make plays in the passing game while Rose, Smoke and Rodriguez Jr. combined for 14 catches for 95 yards in 2019.

If the offense is looking for a running back to help out in the passing game, Drennen II may be the top option.

Drennen II is ranked the No. 246 overall prospect and sixth-best all-purpose back in the 2020 class by 247Sports.
