College Football: Top 5 QBs who’ll contend for 2020 Heisman Trophy
Sam Howell broke out in the ACC last season as a true freshman, despite the Tar Heels finishing with a 7-6 record. He led the ACC in passing touchdowns with 38. What makes that 38 number more impressive is the fact that it’s the third-most in ACC history for any quarterback — more than quarterbacks including Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan and Phillip Rivers.

It is also worth noting that Howell had at least three touchdowns in 8-of-13 games.
Howell brings a lot more than just touchdown numbers to North Carolina. He has a very strong arm and can make very difficult throws outside the numbers. He isn’t exactly Kyler Murray, but he is good on his feet and can improvise when needed.
Howell does need to work on his mechanics and footwork in the pocket, but as a young quarterback those issues can be ironed out with more experience.
Some may say I’m one year early having Howell this high up on Heisman contenders, as North Carolina is coming off an up and down season. Team success is usually a factor when looking at Heisman contenders. Add on the fact that the ACC still runs through Clemson and Trevor Lawrence, Howell and North Carolina will be fighting an uphill battle.
I do believe in Howell’s raw talent and think it is good enough to be considered among the best. If he can hone in on this talent, I believe he will break out on the college football scene as one of the elite players in the nation.
