Texas State football must piece together competent offense in 2020
By Dante Pryor
In year two of the Jake Spavital era with Texas State football, can the Bobcats continue their rebuild? A winning season would be a start.
When second-year head coach Jake Spavital took over at Texas State University, they had two 10-loss seasons their last three years. They had not had a winning season in FBS since 2014 when Dennis Franchione was head coach.
The Bobcats — not the Armadillos — did not begin playing FBS level football until 2012 when they made the transition from the FCS. They do claim two national titles in Division II. They do not have much football history at Texas State, but Spavital is attempting to change that.
Spavital and his coaching staff look to improve on last year’s 3-9 season. In order to do this, the Bobcats have to improve on both sides of the ball. Last season the Bobcats finished outside the top 100 in both scoring offense and scoring defense.
Junior quarterback Tyler Vitt looks to improve on the 2019 season that saw him throw 11 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. The defense, which gave up over 400 yards per game last season, looks to improve as well.
Texas State has never been an easy job and few men have had success in San Marcos, Texas, despite being the fifth-largest university in the state. We’ll see if Spavital can succeed at Texas State.
Here is a look at the offense, defense and a prediction of how the Bobcats will fare this season.
