ULM football is looking to make its first bowl game and first winning season since 2012. It will not be easy with so many questions in 2020.

Ever since making the jump to the FBS level as an independent in 1994, ULM football has had one winning season since then and it came in 2012, when the Warhawks went 8-5 and also upset a top 10 Arkansas team as well.

This is a program that is in a talent rich area in the state of Louisiana, but ULM has not been able to find consistent success as a football program. What makes it more frustrating is that hated rival UL-Lafayette seems to have found a groove under head coach Billy Napier, as the Ragin’ Cajuns are looking to make their third straight appearance in the Sun Belt title game.

This will be head coach Matt Viator’s fifth season as the head coach and the Warhawks have been knocking on the door of bowl eligibility, posting a 5-7 season a year ago and a 6-6 season in 2018.

Three of those losses last season came by single-digits, so there is a chance that with some improvement in some key areas, the Warhawks can make it to their second ever bowl game as a football program.

ULM will have some key members back from last year’s team, including tight end Josh Pederson, running back Josh Johnson and cornerback Corey Straughter, but the biggest question that they will have to face is who replaces quarterback Caleb Evans, who was one of the most productive gunslingers in the conference.

The defense will have to make big strides and a schedule that includes games against Georgia and Arkansas will not make that easy.
