Heading into the season, everyone is expecting Florida football to contend in the SEC but here’s why the Gators may struggle.
We are entering year three of the Dan Mullen and the first two were nothing if not successful. The Gators are 21-5 over the last two years and the former Mississippi State head coach looks like he has the perfect squad that can compete for the SEC title.
Going 11-2 last season and 6-2 in the SEC with a 14-point loss to eventual national champion LSU and one-touchdown defeat versus Georgia was impressive, but the Gators still seem like they’re not quite “there” yet. Losing to really the two main threats on the schedule (outside of Auburn and maybe Tennessee) last season showed that.
The Gators beat up on some lesser opponents last season like South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Missouri with a relatively favorable schedule. They also smacked around Tennessee Martin, Towson and Florida State while struggling to put away Miami in the opener.
Mullen still has his work cut out if he’s going to engineer a double-digit win season on a 10-game schedule which is stuffed with conference-only games.
Kyle Trask is back and Kyle Pitts may be one of the best tight ends in the nation, but there are some reasons that this team will struggle and fall short of expectations.
