2. Defense was opportunistic, but still has work to do

If you coach defense, the No. 1 thing you want your guys to do is force turnovers. Creating havoc is what every defensive coordinator loves and if you’re Lyle Hemphill, you have to be pretty content after Friday night’s showing as the Demon Deacons forced four turnovers against Campbell which led to a few scores.

All you can really ask for is for a defense to get the ball back and get off the field quickly and the Demon Deacons did one of those things.

The defense was causing problems for Campbell with fumbles and interceptions, but the Fighting Camels were still having no problems moving the ball. They finished with 362 total yards and even set the tone early on with a long drive that resulted in a missed chip-shot field goal. Would things have been different if Campbell scored first? Probably not, but the Demon Deacons looked bad.

Through the first three games of the season, Wake Forest’s defense has left a lot to be desired, especially after surrendering 45 points to NC State. If this doesn’t get corrected, it’s going to be a long shortened season for Wake.
