2. UMass loses first game at Georgia Southern 41-0

It has not been an easy year for some of these programs who had multiple games canceled. The UMass Minutemen, who are classified as independent, played most of their games against Sun Belt and MAC teams. They were finally able to play their first game of the 2020 season against Georgia Southern (3-1, 1-1 Sun Belt).

The Eagles came in as 30-point favorites over the Minutemen as they were more conditioned to play. The Minutemen found themselves flat on both sides of the ball as they were out-gained in total yards 436-191 as well as first downs 20-10.

The Minutemen’s passing offense was completely suppressed as they were held to 80 yards and two interceptions on 13-of-21 completions.

UMass’ defense was unable to stop the RPO-style offense of the Eagles as they allowed 309 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries for an average of 7.7 yards per carry.

Georgia Southern accounted for 14 points in each of the first and second quarter as they took a 28-0 score into halftime. Coming out of halftime, the Eagles pumped the brakes with their fast-paced offense but there were still able to score 10 points in the third frame.

The Minutemen (0-1) will continue their season week-by-week as they only have one more scheduled game as they look to add more. UMass will travel to take on No. 22 Marshall (4-0, 2-0 C-USA) on Nov. 7.
