Florida football is looking like a serious playoff threat, but it’ll have to get through Georgia in Week 10 to truly make a statement.

It’s that time of the season already for Florida and Georgia. While it feels like the season just began yesterday (it did start late because of COVID-19), the yearly World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is finally upon us.

Florida and Georgia will meet up in Jacksonville for the neutral-field battle and like it has been for most years, this game could very well decide who comes out of the SEC East.

The season is about halfway through and this might just be the toughest game left on both teams’ schedules. A win for the Bulldogs would likely put them in that top four while a win for the Gators would put them on the brink and maybe over the edge with a guaranteed drop of either Notre Dame or Clemson.

Here’s why Florida will take care of business in this one.

3. Defense picking up some much-needed steam

Through the first three games of the year, Florida had one of the worst defenses in the SEC which was uncharacteristic for the Gators. Defense had been this program’s calling card for years.

Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas A&M put up some yards and points against the Gators as two out of three of those scored at least 35 points. The Gators went 2-1 in that span, but it was clear that the offense was feeling the pressure of scoring on every drive because the defense couldn’t get the necessary stops — we saw that especially against Texas A&M.

Then after a couple of weeks off, the Gators shut a rising Missouri team with a budding star quarterback down. They held the Tigers to under 300 total yards and just looked like a completely different team in the blowout.

Defense sometimes needs a momentum shift to get back on track and it seems like things were corrected during the time off and momentum is on the Gators’ side while Georgia’s offense is struggling.
