1. Talent gap not extreme

Before the season and even after a week or two of play, one would be led to believe that the talent gap between a Big 12 contender like Texas and West Virginia was massive. Actually, that’s not the case.

West Virginia played the Longhorns tight on the road for 60 minutes and even had a chance to take the lead in the final minutes, but a failed fourth-down conversion essentially ended the game. Jarret Doege just missed his guy in the end zone on the Mountaineers’ final offensive possession but it was by a matter of inches. If he hits him, this is a different story.

The Mountaineers are building something special and a 4-3 record in the middle of year two of the Neal Brown era isn’t too shabby. Nearly beating Texas on the road is good for moral victories and all, but next season, a win over the Longhorns will be expected.

Watch out, Big 12, West Virginia isn’t too far away from contending for conference titles.
