The Heisman Trophy race is starting to really heat up and one Florida football star should be at the top of the list. Kyle Trask should be No. 1.

When Florida’s season was put on hold after a COVID-19 outbreak, it seemed like that three-week break would cost the Gators a shot at the playoff as well as Kyle Trask a fair shake in the Heisman Trophy race.

About a month later and everyone that thought that now looks ridiculous.

Since returning from the three-week break, Trask has thrown for 1,175 yards and 14 touchdowns with only one interception. He’s averaging nearly five touchdowns per game this season, totaling 28 in six games. He also has just three picks in 211 attempts and the third-best QBR in college football.

When you look at other top candidates in the Heisman race, Trask compares favorable and should have the slight edge over everyone.

Justin Fields might be the biggest threat right now with 11 touchdowns to no interceptions with 908 passing yards and an astounding 87 percent completion rate, but he has a much smaller sample size with three games under his belt and one already cancelled. He does, however, have the nation’s best QBR.

Trevor Lawrence has missed two games after testing positive for COVID-19 but he had 1,833 yards and 17 touchdowns with a 71 percent completion rate in six games. Not quite as impressive as Trask.

Lastly, Mac Jones is right up there and he has the nation’s second-best QBR to go along with 2,196 yards and 16 touchdowns with two picks and a 79 percent completion rate. He, too, has played six games.

The only thing that might prevent Trask from being the No. 1 contender in the race is his completion rate, but the rest of the numbers are there. Averaging 4.7 touchdowns per game is actually insane. If he keeps this pace and Florida plays the rest of its regular season games and he leads the Gators to the SEC title game, he’ll be over 50 touchdown passes on a shortened season.

If that’s not No. 1 Heisman candidate material, I don’t know what is.
